◆ Cognitive Engineering · OODA Loop
While you're still trying to understand what's happening,
your opponent has already decided.
The OODA Loop is the doctrine fighter pilots use to win in split seconds — the same one elite athletes and leaders use to turn chaos into advantage. Download the free e-book and start deciding faster than your opponent.
01 · The Method
Four phases. Less than a second.
The whole game is decided there.
In 1976, fighter pilot and colonel John Boyd formalized the cycle that explained why some pilots won aerial combat even in inferior aircraft: Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. The same logic commands a decisive play in any sport — reading the ball's trajectory or the opponent, choosing the move, executing — all repeated in tighter and tighter cycles, whether in tennis, soccer, volleyball, or wrestling. Whoever spins that cycle faster doesn't just get stronger. They become impossible to control.
-
01
Observe
Take in as much information from the environment as possible before it changes — the ball's trajectory, the opponent's movement, the weak signals most people miss.
-
02
Orient
Filter what you observed through your experience, your instincts, and your training. This is the most decisive phase of the cycle — and where most people lose the point before they even decide.
-
03
Decide
Choose, among the options your orientation opened up, the right response — no hesitation, no noise. Deciding isn't the moment to think. It's the moment to choose.
-
04
Act
Execute without hesitating — then observe the result of your own action. The cycle starts again, faster every time, until it becomes trained instinct.
